How Bad Is It if You Don't Floss Properly?

You brush diligently, maybe even use mouthwash, but that little string can seem easy to skip. But is it really that important? The short answer: absolutely. In the world of oral care, flossing is a critical piece of the puzzle for maintaining a healthy smile.

Why Flossing Matters

Think of your toothbrush as a painter with a big brush. It does a great job covering large surfaces, like the fronts and backs of your teeth. But what about the tight spaces between your teeth? That's where your floss comes in – it's the detail brush, reaching the areas your toothbrush can't.

These spaces are perfect hiding spots for plaque, a sticky film filled with bacteria. These bacteria feast on the sugars and starches in the food you eat, producing acids that attack your tooth enamel. Over time, this acid attack can lead to cavities, also known as tooth decay.

But it doesn't stop there. Plaque that isn't removed can harden into tartar (calculus). Tartar is like concrete for bacteria; it's rough and porous, providing even more places for plaque to accumulate. Only a dental professional can remove tartar.

The Consequences of Neglecting to Floss

When you don't floss properly, or don't floss at all, you're essentially inviting trouble. Here's what can happen:

•  Cavities: As mentioned earlier, plaque buildup leads to tooth decay. Cavities can cause pain, sensitivity, and eventually require fillings or more extensive treatment.
•  Gum Disease (Gingivitis and Periodontitis): The bacteria in plaque irritate your gums, causing inflammation. This is gingivitis, the early stage of gum disease. Symptoms include red, swollen, and bleeding gums. If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, a more serious infection that damages the bone and tissues that support your teeth. Periodontitis can lead to tooth loss.
•  Bad Breath (Halitosis): Food particles and bacteria trapped between your teeth can cause unpleasant odors. Regular flossing helps remove these odor-causing culprits, leaving your breath fresher.
•  Systemic Health Links: Emerging research suggests a link between gum disease and other health problems, such as heart disease, diabetes, and respiratory infections. While the exact nature of these connections is still being studied, maintaining good oral hygiene is important for your overall health.

Flossing: A Key Component of Prevention Dentistry

Flossing is a vital part of prevention dentistry. It's a simple habit that can save you from a lot of pain, discomfort, and more involved dental procedures down the road.

How to Floss Effectively

•  Use about 18 inches of floss, wrapping most of it around your middle fingers, leaving a few inches to work with.
•  Gently guide the floss between your teeth using a sawing motion. Avoid snapping the floss into your gums.
•  Curve the floss into a "C" shape around each tooth, and slide it gently under the gumline.
•  Use a clean section of floss for each tooth.

Making Flossing a Habit

Start slow. If you're not used to flossing, begin by flossing just a few teeth each day and gradually increase the number until you're flossing all your teeth once a day. Many people find it easiest to floss before bed. Find a time that works best for you and stick to it. Your smile will thank you!
