Orthodontics: How Clear Braces Improve Your Smile
Getting a beautiful smile with straight teeth no longer needs to come from unattractive braces, thanks to advances in orthodontics. Getting clear braces can enhance the self-esteem of patients of any age. Clear braces are a good alternative to traditional bracket and wire braces. Clear braces can treat nearly every orthodontic condition. Read on to learn more about these braces.
Treating orthodontics issues with clear braces
There is a range of conditions that clear braces are suitable for. For example, crooked teeth, crowded teeth, an overbite or underbite and gaps can all be treated. Older teenagers and adults may benefit from this treatment. Many older patients do not desire to have a mouth full of metal for orthodontics treatment. A cosmetic dentist can help a patient decide if clear braces are a good option.
How clear braces work
Many clear braces are not actually clear. Instead, the braces consist of ceramic brackets. The brackets are the same color as the patient’s teeth. In some cases, tooth-colored wires are also used. In other cases, traditional metal wires are used. The brackets are designed to fight stains, but patients will want to avoid highly pigmented foods, such as berries or wine.
The ceramic brackets will blend with the patient’s teeth. This makes the ceramic less visible than metal braces. However, people can still see that the patient is wearing those braces. If the braces become stained, the braces will be even more visible.
Clear braces are made from a mix of materials. However, the materials tend to be more brittle and weaker than metal. The brackets are also larger than the ones used in metal braces. Because of this, patients will need to take extra care while wearing these braces.
The braces will use small ligatures to hold the wire to the brackets. Self-ligating clear braces have a sliding spring clip to do this. The ligatures are either white or clear, meaning they can easily stain. However, the ligatures are changed every time the braces are adjusted – usually every four to six weeks. If a patient gets self-ligating braces, they will not need to have new elastics.
Are there any drawbacks to clear braces?
Ceramic braces have some of the same issues that metal braces do. Patients cannot remove them until the treatment has ended. This can cause dietary restrictions or complicate the cleaning process each day. Sometimes, the brackets or wire can cause discomfort in the mouth. Clear braces do not work quite as fast as metal braces. However, patients will benefit from a more beautiful smile.
Visit a cosmetic dentist for orthodontics
If you are not happy with your smile, then clear braces may be an option for you. You may not want to get clear braces on all of your teeth. If not, then you can choose to have clear braces only on the visible teeth. Talking to a cosmetic dentist can help you determine if clear braces are for you.
